EA is making three changes to Evolutions in FC 27, and two of them fix problems players have been working around with third-party websites for years. Pathways adds branching upgrade choices inside a single Evolution instead of one fixed route. Chain Preview lets you see which Evolutions a card will still qualify for before you commit to the first one. PlayStyles Lab returns from launch, but with pre-applied PlayStyles and harder acquisition rules that stop you stacking the meta picks. Here is what each change does and how it should change the way you plan upgrades.

Pathways: Evolutions that branch
Every Evolution up to now has followed a fixed route. You put a card in, you complete the objectives, and you get exactly the boost printed on the tin. There is no decision to make beyond whether to enter the card at all.
Pathways changes that for some Evolutions. Inside a single upgrade, you will get branching choices: one option might raise dribbling and add a PlayStyle such as Technical, while a different branch in the same Evolution raises defensive awareness and adds something like Jockey. You pick one route, and the card comes out shaped by that choice.
The closest existing comparison is a multi-chain Evolution like Build Your Future Stars, where different upgrade lines lead to different end products. The difference is that Pathways compresses that into one Evolution rather than spreading it across several that each cost tokens or coins to enter.

Traditional linear Evolutions are not going away. EA is adding branching as an option for some upgrades, not replacing the format, so expect most of the free early-cycle Evolutions to work exactly as they do now.
What it changes in practice is that the same base card can serve two different squads. A versatile midfielder who could go either way is worth more under Pathways than under the old system, because you are no longer forced to pick the Evolution that happens to match the card. You pick the card, then decide.
Chain Preview: the end of guessing at eligibility
Right now the failure mode is invisible until it is too late. You run a card through an Evolution that pushes a stat past a cap, and that card is now permanently locked out of a better Evolution that drops three weeks later. There is no in-game warning. The only way to avoid it has been to keep a browser tab open on a third-party Evolution database and cross-check the requirements by hand before every entry.
Chain Preview moves that check inside the game. You will be able to see how one Evolution leads into the next before you commit, and view the best possible combination available across all current Evolutions for a given card, without leaving the menu.
The practical effect is that Evolution planning becomes something you do once, upfront, rather than something you regret later. It also raises the value of holding untouched duplicates of good base cards. If you can see the full chain, you can see which cards are worth two copies, one to burn on a quick upgrade now and one to hold for a longer chain later.
Evolutions are managed from the Companion App as well as in-game, so the planning can happen on your phone rather than at the console. Our FC 27 Web App and Companion guide covers the expected September 16 opening and the eligibility rules for early access.
PlayStyles Lab: no more stacking the meta
PlayStyles Lab arrived during the FC 26 cycle, starting with the World Cup update, and let you apply PlayStyles to cards that shipped without any. It returns in FC 27 from launch, with two changes that both point the same direction.
First, cards will no longer arrive blank. Some PlayStyles will be pre-applied, and you only get to fill the remaining slots. That directly stops the current pattern where every customisable card in the game ends up carrying the same three or four consensus-best PlayStyles, because the pre-applied ones eat part of your budget before you start.
Second, certain PlayStyles will be harder to get. EA has said acquisition may require longer upgrade tasks, completing Objectives, or spending coins. The specific PlayStyles behind the higher cost have not been named, but the ones people currently rush to apply are the obvious candidates.
That coin requirement is the part worth planning around. PlayStyles moving behind a paywall inside the Lab means Evolution budgeting is no longer just about entry costs, and the players who treat PlayStyle application as free will get squeezed. If you are planning to build several Evolution cards in the opening weeks, you can top up your PS5 club before the launch rush rather than stopping halfway through a chain.
The free PlayStyle you may already own
If you cleared the FC 26 Season 10 Pre-Season track, one of the carryover rewards is a Base Quick Step PlayStyle application capped at 83 overall, claimable in your FC 27 club on launch day. Under the new Lab rules, where some PlayStyles cost coins or objective time, a free application on an early-cycle card is worth more than it looked when the reward was announced.
The 83 rating cap keeps it useful for the first couple of weeks only, before your squad outgrows it, so the sensible use is a cheap Silver or Bronze card you intend to run through an early Evolution rather than a gold you will replace by October. Applied that way it stacks with whatever the Evolution itself grants, which is the cheapest route to a fully-loaded early card that FC 27 offers. Our Season 10 Pre-Season rewards breakdown covers the full free and premium track and what else carries over.
How to prepare before launch
Start by holding your base cards untouched. Chain Preview only helps if you still have cards eligible for the chains it shows you, and the cheap high-pace Silver and Bronze cards that fuel rarity-restricted Evolutions get bought out within hours of an Evolution naming them.
Then budget for PlayStyles rather than only for entry costs. Thinking of an Evolution as a flat fee to get in is incomplete now that the Lab has prices attached to it.
And do not commit anything good on day one. The first Evolutions of a cycle are always the weakest, and Chain Preview exists so you can see what a card gives up by entering one. Use it before you burn a card you cannot replace.

FAQ
What is changing with Evolutions in FC 27?
Three things: branching Pathways inside single Evolutions, an in-game Chain Preview that shows which future Evolutions a card will still qualify for, and a reworked PlayStyles Lab with pre-applied PlayStyles and harder acquisition rules.
What are Evolution Pathways in FC 27?
Branching upgrade choices within one Evolution. Instead of a single fixed route, you choose between options that boost different attributes and grant different PlayStyles, such as dribbling with Technical or defensive awareness with Jockey.
What is Chain Preview in FC 27?
An in-game tool that shows how one Evolution leads into the next before you commit, including the best available combination for a given card. It replaces the third-party Evolution databases players currently use to avoid locking cards out.
Are linear Evolutions gone in FC 27?
No. Traditional single-route Evolutions remain. Branching is being added to some Evolutions rather than replacing the format across the board.
How is PlayStyles Lab changing in FC 27?
Cards will ship with some PlayStyles already applied instead of blank, so you fill only the remaining slots. Certain PlayStyles will also require longer upgrade tasks, Objectives, or coins to acquire.
Final word
Pathways gives Evolutions a decision that matters, and Chain Preview removes the one thing that made Evolution planning genuinely unpleasant. Both are straightforward wins. The PlayStyles Lab rework cuts the other way, tightening what was the most generous customisation system EA has shipped, and the coin requirement attached to some PlayStyles is the detail worth watching once the specifics land.
Evolution planning now has two costs attached to it, the entry itself and whatever the PlayStyles Lab charges on top. Buy FC 27 coins at FUTCOIN as soon as the new season goes live so you can run a full chain start to finish instead of stalling on the last upgrade.
